In China, the government is studying the feasibility of raising the mandatory retirement age.
Why to do this? To shrink the huge deficit in the pension fund.
Some experts considered that it would be of benefit to the whole country in raising the retirement age.
First, under the current system, many people have to quit their jobs although they are both physically capable and experienced. This is a loss for the nation.
Second, by the middle of this century, every two workers will need to pay for the pension of one senior citizen. It would be a heavy burden to the State if we don't do that.
However, if we raise the retirement age, there will have some new problems.
One, it may worsen unemployment, and make it harder for young people to find jobs. At least 24 million urban residents need jobs each year, but only 11 million openings.
Two, individual choices should be respected. While many people would like to work for another couple of years, others may want to enjoy their lives in retirement.
The article didn't have any conclusion in the end. It only showed two different opinions and either of them is reasonable. Maybe each of us now has another thought.
With me, I don't like raising the retirement age, I want to do something different from my career in retirement
As far as I know, many countries have the same problem. How do they solve it?
What is their policy? I looked up it through Internet and got some information.
In Taiwan, when people get their first job, the government will open a special account for them. The account will be valid with all his life, even he change his job.
What's the account good for? It helps people to save money for their retirement.
When people get salary from their employer, 12% of it will be deposited into the special account. You won't be able to withdraw money from it until you are older than the retirement age.
In China, I have ever seen many people quiting or retiring their jobs, and getting no extra money. So if they do not save money when working, how can they survive!
I believe that it must have similar policies in China, however, it has not been run very well, so I hope one day, the Chinese government will be able to put forward a better policy and respect more and more others' choices.
